The Union of Associations of Civilian Invalids of Wars (USCIW) was established in December 1969. In the following years its inter-municipal societies - six of them, covering the whole territory of Slovenia - were established.
USCIW has 1030 members - civilian invalids of wars.
The main objectives of the USCIW are to assist the civilian invalids of wars in their incorporation into normal life and work. For these purposes, USCIW and its societies are active on implementation of special social and other programs in every field of society, it performs certain tasks to cover the needs of civilian victims of wars to live as independent as possible by following these basic aims:
1. enforcement of human rights of invalids
2. incorporation into society and everyday life
3. non-discrimination of invalids
4. stimulating invalids to use their own strength and abilities
5. autonomy of invalids in the use of services
6. economic, social, health and legal protection of invalids
7. social equity and equal possibilities.
Union is working on the base of human relations and solidarity and stands for peaceful resolution of conflicts between people, nations and countries. In its international cooperation it stands against all kinds of violence, aggression and terrorism.
Union, in cooperation with its inter-municipal societies is implementing special programs for civilian invalids of wars. Undoubtedly one of the most important programs implemented by Union is organization and implementation of programs for preservation of health status in its own units, adapted to the needs of invalids - mostly activities to preserve their psychophysical condition, social activity, preventing of social isolation, mutual assistance, self assistance and social integration. This program is implemented as a priority among the other programs, since the average age of our members exceeds 70 years and thus, age and invalidity are the factors that are conducting the implementation of this program.
There are also other programs that are without doubt also of the crucial importance to our members: organization and implementation of adjusted sports and recreational activities, assistance in increasing the level of life quality in their own environment and assistance in asserting of their rights for technical remedies. Union is also publishing its own magazine 4 times per year. It includes articles from different fields written by invalids. Beside that it also includes specialized articles from the field of health, nutrition, care for invalids, problems of ageing etc. This newsletter also informs all the members (they get it for free) and general society on the news and on changes in legislation covering invalids issues and their protection.
Beside the programs mentioned, Union also implements some other special social programs that are in line with the directives of our Union. All these programs are earmarked for all civilian invalids of wars including non-members of our Union, even though there are not many such. One of the important programs of the Union is also assistance in carrying into effect the rights covered from protection of invalids for all civilian invalids of wars. We are using evaluation of each program to verify the justification and need for certain program, since our basic principle is that the beneficiary - civilian invalid of war - is the basis of our criteria. We are aware of the fact that we have to verify justification and implementation of programs, improve them or change them taking into account the needs of the members. We can say that our programs are achieving their aims - short-term and global ones.
